About The Project
This project is an interactive website that is accompanied by an immersive mobile app that provides an audio driven tour of this fantastic city focusing on the influence of German immigration and culture on the city’s colourful ethnic fabric. The individual walks were created by Toronto writer and columnist Shawn Micallef, who is widely credited as an authority on Canadian urbanism. Shawn is the author of four books, a weekly columnist at the Toronto Star, and co-founder and a senior editor of the award–winning magazine Spacing.
Shawn is also the narrator of the English-speaking walks that you are listening to. The German- speaking walks are narrated by Tanja Matuszis and Florian Schrieverhoff. Tanja is a journalist and former editor for Germany’s public broadcaster WDR and was the Press Officer at the German Consulate General in Toronto until September 2022. Florian is a career diplomat who has been the Cultural Attaché of the German Consulate General in Toronto since 2021 and has worked in Germany’s diplomatic service since 2005.
The design and development of the web and mobile platforms were done by Michael Carter-Arlt from the Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries, in addition with some audio recording and editing. The primary photography and audio recording for this project was provided by Liam Maloney, who is a documentary photographer and educator based between Toronto and Montréal. He is best known for his work reporting on humanitarian issues tied to armed conflict around the globe.
Additional photography was also provided by Neal Rockwell of Toronto, ON. along with Alexa Vachon of Toronto, ON.
